What happened

YouTrip, a multi-currency e-wallet used for travel spending, suffered a major outage on Monday, 19 October, that took down most of its services in Singapore and Thailand, according to The Straits Times, The Business Times and CNA. The company's own status tracker listed in-app exchange, wallet balance and the digital wallet with a "major outage" status. Only four functions kept working: logging in, viewing card details, signing up and the eSIM service.

The details

The Straits Times reported that in Singapore, top-ups, in-app currency exchange, ATM withdrawals and the digital wallet were among the services that stopped working by around noon. In Thailand, it counted 11 of 14 services as unavailable, including wallet balances, top-ups and card transactions. Australia was marked as under maintenance, while Malaysia, YouTrip's fourth market, was shown as fully operational. Around 12:50 pm the newspaper found that the affected services in Singapore and Thailand had moved to "degraded performance", but no full fix had been confirmed at the time of reporting.

What the company said

Replying to a customer on Facebook, YouTrip said its app was facing "technical difficulties" and warned of degraded service for card payments and other features, including ATM withdrawals. It said its teams were carrying out maintenance to fix the problem. One customer wrote that money moved into the app about two hours earlier was still showing as pending, according to both The Straits Times and The Business Times.

Not the first disruption this year

The Straits Times noted an earlier incident on 24 February, when some customers saw card transactions declined and then charged later. The company said at the time that the issue was resolved the next day, with payment functions back to normal from that evening. Monday's outage was wider: it touched the exchange, top-up and cash functions that travellers rely on while abroad.

Why it matters for payments

Multi-currency wallets bundle several jobs into one money transfer app: loading money, converting currencies, card payments and cash withdrawals. When the platform goes down, every one of those jobs can stop at the same moment, as Monday's status page showed. For someone mid-trip, that means no top-up, no currency conversion and possibly no cash, even though logging in and viewing card details still worked. The episode is a reminder that payment reliability is not only about fees and exchange rates but also about having a second way to pay or move money when one service is unavailable.

What to watch next

Watch for a full restoration notice and any explanation of the root cause from YouTrip, and whether pending top-ups and transfers are settled without customer action. It is also worth seeing whether the company publishes a post-incident report, given that this is its second reported payment disruption of the year in Singapore.
