Top-ups

What is Visa Direct, and how do you receive money on your card?

Money moving from a bank to a card as a top-up

Most people know how to pay with a card. Fewer know that money can also be sent to a card. Visa Direct is the service that makes this possible. This guide explains how it works, what you need to share and how to use it with your Odix card.

What is Visa Direct?

Visa Direct is Visa's payment service for pushing money to a card. Instead of sending money to an IBAN or an account number, the sender uses the recipient's card number, and the money is added to that card's balance.

Banks, payment apps and businesses use Visa Direct for things like card-to-card transfers between people, payouts from platforms and top-ups from one card to another. Whether a sender can use it depends on their bank or app, and on local rules.

Two ways to get money onto your Odix card

With Odix Pay, Visa Direct works with the Odix Visa cards: Odix White, Odix Black and Odix Rose Metal.

  • From your own bank. Open any bank's app, choose its card transfer (transfer to card) option and enter your Odix card number.

  • From someone else. Friends, family or anyone who owes you money can send it straight to your Odix card with a card transfer from their bank's app. They only need your card number, and you're notified when it lands.

What to share, and what never to share

To receive money with Visa Direct, the sender needs your 16-digit card number only.

  • Never share your CVV, expiry date, PIN or one-time codes. Nobody needs them to send you money.

  • Be wary of anyone who says they need your codes "to release a payment". That is a common scam.

  • Share your card number only with people you expect money from.

Visa Direct, open banking or IBAN?

A card transfer is one of several ways to add money to Odix Pay:

  • A card transfer from any bank's app sends money to your Odix Visa card using the card number.

  • Open banking lets you top up from your own bank account, approved in your banking app. See our guide to open banking vs card top-up.

  • A bank transfer to your virtual IBAN lets people pay you by normal bank transfer. See how to receive money from abroad.

Step by step

How to receive money with Visa Direct, step by step

  1. Get your Odix Visa card

Download the Odix Pay app, verify your identity and order Odix White, Odix Black or Odix Rose Metal.

  2. Find your card number

You'll see it in the app, ready to copy.

  3. Share only the card number

Give it to the person sending you money. Nothing else is needed.

  4. They send with a card transfer

The sender chooses the card transfer option in their bank's app and enters your card number. To top up yourself, do the same from your own bank's app.

  5. Get notified

The app tells you when the money lands on your card.

  6. Use it

Spend it in shops and online, withdraw cash or send it on from the app.

Good to know

Any limits are shown in the Odix Pay app. Any Odix fees are shown in the app before you confirm; the sender's bank or app may charge its own fee. For an overview, see the help centre. Visa Direct works in many countries, but availability depends on the sender's bank or app and on local rules.
