Japan's Suica adds teppay code payments

JR East has launched teppay, a code payment service inside the Mobile Suica app with balance transfers and higher limits, as Japan searches about cash surge.

What happened

East Japan Railway (JR East) switched on teppay, a new code payment service built into the Mobile Suica app, from 11:00 on 20 October, with access rolling out in stages, Travel Watch reported. A day later, "現金" (cash) was one of the most searched terms in Japan on Google, with more than 5,000 searches, and the linked headlines were all about teppay and its challenge to the country's established code payment apps. Existing Mobile Suica users do not need a separate app or a new registration; they only have to accept the terms, according to Keitai Watch.

How teppay works, including transfers

Suica payments were previously capped at around 20,000 yen. With teppay, users who verify their identity with a My Number Card can pay up to 300,000 yen from their teppay balance, DX Magazine reported. Linking a View Card, the credit card of a JR East group company, lets people pay up to the card's credit limit without topping up first. The service can also be used to buy tickets and commuter passes, and payments earn teppay points that can be exchanged for JRE POINT, according to Keitai Watch.

One of the bigger changes is person-to-person transfers. Users can send and receive teppay balance with family and friends, for example to split a bill or give pocket money, Travel Watch said. Received balance can be moved into Mobile Suica or used for commuter passes. In practice this turns a transit card app into a small money transfer app, which is a step beyond the tap-to-pay role Suica has played for years.

Where it works

teppay is accepted at JR East group facilities, at shops showing the teppay mark and at more than 1.7 million locations nationwide that support Smart Code, including station shopping centres, convenience stores, hotels, department stores and electronics retailers, according to Travel Watch and DX Magazine. For online shopping, a teppay JCB prepaid card can be issued in the app for JCB merchants in Japan. Support for the Mobile PASMO app, with transfers between Suica and PASMO users, is planned from spring 2027.

Background: a late entry into a crowded market

Japanese media have framed the launch as a late but serious move. Business magazine DIME describes code payments in Japan as a market dominated by PayPay, and says it is still unclear how much share teppay can win. In November 2025, ITmedia reported that a JR East executive cited user fatigue with too many cashless payment options as a reason to build on the familiar transit card. DX Magazine places teppay in JR East's "Suica Renaissance" plan to turn Suica from a transit and small-payment tool into an everyday platform.

Why it matters for payments

The day after launch, searches about cash spiked in Japan, a reminder of how closely people watch the move away from notes and coins. teppay combines three things people usually spread across several apps: cashless payments in shops, a card-linked balance and transfers between people. For visitors and for people who send money to Japan, it is one more sign that local payment habits are moving into phones.

What to watch next

Watch how quickly teppay builds users and merchants once its launch campaigns start in November, whether small shops and event stalls sign up, and how the PASMO link works in 2027. Any response from the existing code payment apps will also be worth following.
