Klarna launches Consumer FX for shoppers
Klarna's new Consumer FX lets shoppers buy from participating merchants in other countries and pay in their own currency, with the rate shown before they pay.

What happened
Klarna, the payments company behind the "klarna" searches trending in the UK this week, launched a feature called Consumer FX on 21 October. It lets shoppers buy from any participating Klarna merchant around the world and pay in their own currency. Klarna says the service carries no exchange fee and that the price and exchange rate are shown upfront, then stay visible in the Klarna app after the purchase, so the statement should match what the shopper saw at checkout.
The details
According to Klarna's announcement, Consumer FX is live across all of its markets and currencies: the US dollar, euro, pound sterling, Swedish, Norwegian and Danish kroner, the Canadian, Australian and New Zealand dollars, and the Mexican peso. On the merchant side, any business already connected to Klarna can sell to customers in those markets without a new integration, a local company or a foreign bank account. Klarna handles the currency disclosure, consent and compliance steps. In early results, Klarna reports a 5% lift in conversion and a 6% increase in sales from the wider reach.
Why Klarna is pushing cross-border shopping
Klarna says it has about 120 million active consumers in 26 countries and more than 1.2 million live merchants, a merchant base that grew 54% in a year. To show the demand, it cites DHL's 2026 E-Commerce Trends Report: 70% of shoppers now buy from other countries, and 45% do so more than once a month. In Securities.io's summary of the same report, local-currency pricing is one of the things that would make shoppers more likely to buy from abroad, alongside free delivery, secure payments and free returns. The launch came in a busy week: Klarna also announced a small-business partnership with FreshBooks in the US and Canada and a wider tie-up with Fiserv after going live at 100,000 US locations through Clover.
Why it matters for payments
Paying a foreign shop has long meant a hidden question: who converts the money, at what rate, and when do you see it? Klarna's move puts the rate in front of the shopper before the payment rather than after. For anyone comparing a money transfer app, a bank card or a shopping app for spending in another currency, the useful test is the same: is the exchange rate shown in full before you confirm, and does the final statement match it? Clear pricing at checkout also makes it easier to compare what you pay when you send money abroad.
What people are really asking
People searching "money transfer card", "money transfer app" or the cost of a foreign payment are usually asking the same thing in different words: how much will actually arrive, or actually leave, after conversion. Klarna's announcement does not change bank or card pricing, and it applies only at merchants that take Klarna, but it adds pressure on every provider to show the rate earlier.
What to watch next
Watch whether Klarna adds more currencies beyond the ten it lists, how many merchants switch the feature on, and how its FX rate compares with other providers once shoppers can see both. The year-end shopping season will show how widely shoppers use it.
What it means for Odix Pay users
Odix Pay is not a shopping or buy-now-pay-later app, but the same principle applies to money you move abroad. In the Odix Pay app you can send money to bank accounts at home and abroad, and you see the currencies available for each destination and the fee and rate in the app before you confirm. Availability depends on your country, and fees are shown in the app. More stories in the Odix Pay newsroom.
